        It probably is possible to buy just the board but I have not
        looked into that.   The cooling and mounting considerations
        make the integrated solution desirable.

        One (possible) problem might the the I/O panel on the back - it
        could be smaller/different than a standard ATX case and thus
        not fit.

        There are other models that have integrated IEEE1394 and a single
        PCI slot, and so on.     For  "Video Recorder" or a system that
        needs to be in a quiet area the new mini-style systems look 
        very attractive.
