I've been doing a lot of MPEG-2 compression on DV from Apple's Final Cut Express (NTSC 740x480 29.9fps) using MediaPipe (a toolset based on MJPEGTOOLS.)
I've been struggling with trying to get the compressed quality up. I understand the effects of scaling resolution (352x240, 352x480, 480x480, etc.) but what I'm wrestling with is compression artifacts - color blocks, fuzzy backgrounds, etc. (My end goal is to get as much good quality video as I can on an SVCD.) I've been mostly messing with the parameters for ppmtoy4m and mpeg2enc. Based on a paper by Matt Haveri (http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.txt) and experiments of my own, I've been concluding that bit rate has a significant effect on the compression quality I'm getting. Q: Does anyone know of any publications, white papers, books, that explain the nuances of MPEG compression, especially in reference to mpeg2enc??? I'm looking for, basically, a How-To for getting the best quality from MPEG-2. I'm also planning to run the MJPEGTOOLS on a Linux system, to offload my Mac. Q: Does anyone have any benchmark numbers on MPEG-2 compression on different platforms?
