BTW, VCD/SVCD lose some 600 sectors (8 seconds) to the first track and
the gaps.

Thanks for the info. I've been wondering just what overheads I should include in the calculations.

I've heard that SVCD needs about 3-5 MB (about 20-34 seconds with 2048 B/sector) for other than MPEG2 data. Usually a 74 minute CD is actually about 74 minutes 40 seconds or even more so I have ignored this overhead.

Are these 600 sectors and 3-5 MB the same (XS)VCD overheads?

And I usually want to break MPEG2 to smaller chunks anyway because my
DVD player has very slow fast forward/rewind so it is quicker and more
precice to split the SVCD in chapters.

There was tutorial "Chaptering with entrypoints" by Michael Tam at the VCDimager site that makes for interesting reading, IIRC.

Do I have to use .bin files for these VCDimager SVCD entrypoints to work?

I have burned my SVCDs with Mac's Toast as .img files. I haven't yet had good results with .bin files, at least with Toast. There is cdrdao for the Mac but I haven't played with it much.
