I don't know were you are from, but here in Germany the Sony is not
available at all, i.e. nearly impossible to buy.
The common sense in the german cd/dvd burner newsgroups is to go with
the Toshiba one, which is the cheapest DVD burner available, but he
only does 1x DVD-RW and 2x DVD-R. The latter is not too much of a
problem, because the 4xDVD-R are still quite expensive. YOu have to see
how important DVD-RW is for you, which is quite painful at 1x speed.

An alternative is the NEC 1100A, a 4x DVD+R writer. Also quite cheap
and state-of-the-art speed.

And last but not least the aforementioned Pioneer A05 or TEAC DV-W50,
which is a Pioneer clone (and which I own). I am very happy with it and
never had problems. One problem with 2x DVD-RW is that there is only
one media for 2x writing out yet (at least I don't know of any other),
which is made by Pioneer and cost ca. 12¤ here. The retail A04 has 1
DVD-RW (2x) and 4 DVD-R (4x) whereas the TEAC doesn't have any media
anymore as I've been told (There was one Verbatim 4x media with mine).
