Allow me to reply to my own letter for a second... :-)

I've now visited him.  He verified that all LaserDisc video is indeed
analog.  Also, he says the problem I'm talking about here is "laser
rot" -- basically, the plastic seal around the aluminum has gone bad,
and the aluminum disc is oxidizing.  The good news is, it's largely an
issue of manufacturing defect, so if you don't see it in your
LaserDiscs now, you never will.  (Since it takes about 3 years to show
up, and since they stopped making LaserDiscs in 2000.)

So now I have my purpose here: to expand yuvdenoise to handle the type
of artifacts caused by LaserDisc rot. :-)
