To test, try manually converting whatever you want to print with ghostscript, and then printing the result.
I found that the filter script included with ghostscript didn't work, but with some hacking I got it to work. It does some horrible shell hacks to "autoconfig", and if you just edit in the correct gs filter for your device it should work fine.
