For the record, the softraid metadata change between 4.7 and 4.8 was to facilitate boot loader storage within the softraid volume. The original change was not backwards compatible and required a complete recreation of the softraid volume. During c2k10 this was redeveloped so that an in-place upgrade is performed - once you boot a 4.8 kernel the metadata will be upgraded (obviously a 4.7 kernel will no longer be able to read it). The in-place upgrade results in a boot loader storage area of 0 bytes in size and as a result, you will not be able to boot from this softraid volume when this functionality is supported. -- "Stop assuming that systems are secure unless demonstrated insecure; start assuming that systems are insecure unless designed securely." - Bruce Schneier
