in formal written text, such as a man page, i certainly prefer to spell them out. the abbreviations just look icky and, as you say, there's still room for confusion. however, it's how many people write (myself included), and our pages are full of such things. but in the example we changed it would have meant breaking a line. and it's a conf file, not prose. jmc
