That is how I sometimes use -snapshots. I'll download today's i386 snapshot and the snapshot ports.tar.gz. I'll then install and run such a system for a year or so, sometimes less. I've not had issues with this approach. In these instances, I do not update the base install or the ports tree. I just use what I downloaded at that date and time. Brad
