biff was a specific form of mail notification that actually resulted
in a daemon (comsat) writing a one-line summary of new messages to
your terminal.  That's *probably* not what you used to be using.  Most
people nowadays use the mail notification features built into their
shell.  Try searching the manpage for your shell (man ksh, man csh,
etc) for 'mail' to get info on the hook for you.
