init fails after kernel build

Hi everyone,

I managed to get the kernel to build on my sparc system.  I'm booting to 
the new kernel but I get an error that reads:

init: /bin/sh on /etc/rc terminated abnormally, going to single user mode
Enter pathname of shell or RETURN for sh:

So I try a blank (return) and then I get:

init: single user shell terminated, restarting


So now the system is stuck.  What step did I miss?  I rebuilt the 
generic 4.6 kernel because I applied a patch to hopefully fix the 
/dev/cua devices.
