Hi everybody,
A few months ago, I upgraded my home server to new hardware. I've performed
a clean install of 4.6 (and follow -stable), and since the machine now has
a multi-core CPU, I chose the MP kernel. The machine works fine, but I've
noticed some sudden resets (and subsequent automatic boots) of the machine.
At this point, I suspect the hardware. These resets/reboots are quite rare,
perhaps one a month with the system running 24/7 (without any load to speak
of). I did notice that all of these these resets/reboots have occurred with
the MP kernel running. This could very well be a coincidence however.
I found that the dmesg buffer doesn't survive such a reset, while a normal
"shutdown -r now" keeps the dmesg buffer intact. Could this mean anything?
I wasn't able to find out why these resets occurred. I'm running
symon/syweb, and up to the moment of the reset nothing seems to stand out
in the graphs. The logs don't seem to show anything out of the ordinary as
well, they just stop.
Would the dmesg buffer not surviving such a reset be a clue to the cause of
these resets?
(Dmesgs below, the first is a GENERIC.MP kernel, the second is the same
system running GENERIC.)
