The C Programming Language - This is a must if you're doing C. It's very readable and teaches much more than just language syntax. It's a small book, but if you read their example code until you really "get it" you will have learned a lot. There are also exercises that will make you *think* about how to structure your code, etc. Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment - Covers many, many parts of UNIX programming and is a nice read. It's organized by topic, so after you have read it you can easily use it as a reference. Also, Brett Lambert's suggestion of reading libc is excellent.
