When we started using it (when diansours roamed the earth :-)). It had the
advantage of being highly portable. That;s why we use it. We backup the
following

OpenBSD
FreeBSD
Linux
HP-UX (9, and 10)
Solaris (5, 8, and 10)

Not all of these support things like snapshots etc.
