Hi misc@, I've Ralink RT2561S that I've been happily using on OpenBSD4.4-RELEASE and Ubuntu8.10 (only for LMMS and Youtube, I swear!) for a couple months now. On Ubuntu I was streaming files from my fileserver when suddenly my network died. I rebooted into OpenBSD and got no luck either. Since then the card hasn't worked. There was no power surge (that I was aware of) and the rest of my box seems fine so I don't think it's hardware damage. I'm asking here instead of some Ubuntu forum because I'm sure you'll all know much better ;)
Here's some of the behaviour I'm seeing: First, I am clearly surrounded by several networks: $ sudo ifconfig -M uath0 uath0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 lladdr 00:19:5b:78:74:16 groups: wlan egress media: IEEE802.11 autoselect (OFDM54 mode 11g) status: active ieee80211: nwid transhumane chan 1 bssid 00:1d:7e:20:c4:8c 34dB nwkey <snip> 100dBm nwid NETGEAR chan 11 bssid 00:0f:b5:17:b1:4c 3dB 54M privacy,short_preamble nwid gtf0u2...@$ chan 1 bssid 00:13:10:bc:c3:5e 5dB 54M privacy,short_slottime nwid Maitland chan 1 bssid 00:13:f7:ac:23:02 16dB 54M privacy,short_preamble,short_slottime lladdr 00:13:f7:bd:3a:38 6dB 54M privacy,short_preamble,short_slottime cache nwid Beth chan 11 bssid 00:13:f7:ef:92:b2 6dB 54M privacy,short_preamble,short_slottime nwid reinodojo chan 11 bssid 00:14:a5:9e:d3:7c 22dB 54M privacy,short_preamble nwid 0x000000000000 chan 6 bssid 00:18:f8:af:11:54 14dB 54M privacy,short_preamble,short_slottime nwid transhumane chan 1 bssid 00:1d:7e:20:c4:8c 37dB 54M privacy nwid BELL777 chan 3 bssid 00:1e:c7:6d:e1:51 2dB 54M privacy,short_preamble,short_slottime nwid Home-Wireless chan 11 bssid 00:1e:e5:86:8b:2d 5dB 54M privacy,short_slottime nwid linksys chan 6 bssid 00:21:29:d8:e5:ce 6dB 54M short_slottime lladdr ab:54:ad:b1:ec:ff 0dB 54M cache inet6 fe80::219:5bff:fe78:7416%uath0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5 inet 192.168.0.132 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255 But doing the same scan with the ral(4) (repeatedly): $ sudo ifconfig -M ral0 Password: ral0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 lladdr 00:1a:70:af:09:d2 groups: wlan media: IEEE802.11 autoselect status: no network ieee80211: nwid "" 100dBm nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:0f:b5:17:b1:4c 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:13:f7:ac:23:02 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:13:f7:bd:3a:38 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:13:f7:ef:92:b2 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:14:a5:9e:d3:7c 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:18:f8:af:11:54 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:1d:7e:20:c4:8c 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:1e:e5:86:8b:2d 0dB 54M nwid "" chan 13 bssid 00:21:29:d8:e5:ce 0dB 54M $ sudo ifconfig -M ral0 ral0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 lladdr 00:1a:70:af:09:d2 groups: wlan media: IEEE802.11 autoselect (DS1) status: no network ieee80211: nwid "" 100dBm none inet6 fe80::21a:70ff:feaf:9d2%ral0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2 $ sudo ifconfig -M ral0 ral0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 lladdr 00:1a:70:af:09:d2 groups: wlan media: IEEE802.11 autoselect (DS1) status: no network ieee80211: nwid "" 100dBm none inet6 fe80::21a:70ff:feaf:9d2%ral0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2 and so on every other time after the first it just scans 'none'. And I'm getting intermitten `ral0: device timeout` messages on my console. They are not correlated with scanning. My best guess is that the firmware has become corrupted. http://wiki.debian.org/rt61pci suggests that it does have firmware, but it does it with "All drivers require non-free firmware for their operation." which seems unlikely to me given that ral(4) is the always-recommended chipset for their openness. If it is possible the firmware got corrupted, is there any way I can uncorrupt it? dmesg: OpenBSD 4.4 (GENERIC) #1021: Tue Aug 12 17:16:55 MDT 2008 dera...@i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 2.20 GHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,APIC,SEP,MTRR,PGE,MCA,CMOV,PAT,PSE36,CFLUSH,DS,ACPI,MMX,FXSR,SSE,SSE2,SS,HTT,TM,SBF,SSE3,MWAIT,DS-CPL,EST,TM2,CX16,xTPR real mem = 3479465984 (3318MB) avail mem = 3375378432 (3219MB) mainbus0 at root bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+ BIOS, date 08/08/07, BIOS32 rev. 0 @ 0xf0010, SMBIOS rev. 2.5 @ 0xf06d0 (59 entries) bios0: vendor American Megatrends Inc. version "5.07" date 08/08/2007 bios0: HP-Pavilion GN559AA-ABA a6220n apm0 at bios0: Power Management spec V1.2 apm0: AC on, battery charge unknown acpi at bios0 function 0x0 not configured pcibios0 at bios0: rev 3.0 @ 0xf0000/0x10000 pcibios0: PCI IRQ Routing Table rev 1.0 @ 0xf8820/192 (10 entries) pcibios0: PCI Interrupt Router at 000:31:0 ("Intel 82801IR LPC" rev 0x00) pcibios0: PCI bus #1 is the last bus bios0: ROM list: 0xc0000/0xb400! cpu0 at mainbus0 pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1 (no bios) pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "Intel 82G33 Host" rev 0x02 vga1 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 "Intel 82G33 Video" rev 0x02 wsdisplay0 at vga1 mux 1: console (80x25, vt100 emulation) wsdisplay0: screen 1-5 added (80x25, vt100 emulation) agp0 at vga1: aperture at 0xd0000000, size 0x10000000 drm at vga1 unsupported em0 at pci0 dev 25 function 0 "Intel ICH9 IGP C" rev 0x02: irq 10, address 00:1d:60:42:88:e2 uhci0 at pci0 dev 26 function 0 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 10 uhci1 at pci0 dev 26 function 1 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 4 ehci0 at pci0 dev 26 function 7 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 5 usb0 at ehci0: USB revision 2.0 uhub0 at usb0 "Intel EHCI root hub" rev 2.00/1.00 addr 1 azalia0 at pci0 dev 27 function 0 "Intel 82801I HD Audio" rev 0x02: irq 7 azalia0: codec[s]: Realtek/0x0888 audio0 at azalia0 uhci2 at pci0 dev 29 function 0 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 3 uhci3 at pci0 dev 29 function 1 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 11 uhci4 at pci0 dev 29 function 2 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 5 uhci5 at pci0 dev 29 function 3 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 10 ehci1 at pci0 dev 29 function 7 "Intel 82801I USB" rev 0x02: irq 3 usb1 at ehci1: USB revision 2.0 uhub1 at usb1 "Intel EHCI root hub" rev 2.00/1.00 addr 1 ppb0 at pci0 dev 30 function 0 "Intel 82801BA Hub-to-PCI" rev 0x92 pci1 at ppb0 bus 1 ral0 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "Ralink RT2561S" rev 0x00: irq 11, address 00:1a:70:af:09:d2 ral0: MAC/BBP RT2561C, RF RT2527 "AT&T/Lucent FW322 1394" rev 0x70 at pci1 dev 5 function 0 not configured ichpcib0 at pci0 dev 31 function 0 "Intel 82801IR LPC" rev 0x02: PM disabled pciide0 at pci0 dev 31 function 2 "Intel 82801I SATA" rev 0x02: DMA, channel 0 configured to native-PCI, channel 1 configured to native-PCI pciide0: using irq 11 for native-PCI interrupt atapiscsi0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0 scsibus0 at atapiscsi0: 2 targets, initiator 7 cd0 at scsibus0 targ 0 lun 0: <HL-DT-ST, DVDRRW GSA-H30L, S856> ATAPI 5/cdrom removable cd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 wd0 at pciide0 channel 1 drive 0: <WDC WD4000AAJS-65TKA0> wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 381554MB, 781422768 sectors wd0(pciide0:1:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 ichiic0 at pci0 dev 31 function 3 "Intel 82801I SMBus" rev 0x02: irq 5 iic0 at ichiic0 spdmem0 at iic0 addr 0x50: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM non-parity PC2-5300CL5 spdmem1 at iic0 addr 0x51: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM non-parity PC2-5300CL5 spdmem2 at iic0 addr 0x52: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM non-parity PC2-5300CL5 spdmem3 at iic0 addr 0x53: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM non-parity PC2-5300CL5 pciide1 at pci0 dev 31 function 5 "Intel 82801I SATA" rev 0x02: DMA, channel 0 wired to native-PCI, channel 1 wired to native-PCI pciide1: using irq 11 for native-PCI interrupt usb2 at uhci0: USB revision 1.0 uhub2 at usb2 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 usb3 at uhci1: USB revision 1.0 uhub3 at usb3 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 usb4 at uhci2: USB revision 1.0 uhub4 at usb4 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 usb5 at uhci3: USB revision 1.0 uhub5 at usb5 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 usb6 at uhci4: USB revision 1.0 uhub6 at usb6 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 usb7 at uhci5: USB revision 1.0 uhub7 at usb7 "Intel UHCI root hub" rev 1.00/1.00 addr 1 isa0 at ichpcib0 isadma0 at isa0 pckbc0 at isa0 port 0x60/5 pckbd0 at pckbc0 (kbd slot) pckbc0: using irq 1 for kbd slot wskbd0 at pckbd0: console keyboard, using wsdisplay0 pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi0 at pcppi0: <PC speaker> spkr0 at pcppi0 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: reported by CPUID;
