I have a cheap USB-to-serial converter which uses the FTDI chipset
and works fine. I bought it about a year ago for UK Pounds 12 or so
from

http://www.usbnow.co.uk/p47/USB_2.0_to_RS232_Adaptor_+_1M_Cable/product_info.html

My Thinkpad T42 (just installed 4.4-release) detects this gadget as:
uftdi0 at uhub2 port 2 "FTDI USB Serial Converter" rev 1.10/4.00 addr 2
  ucom0 at uftdi0 portno 1
and reports:
  # usbdevs -v -f /dev/usb2
  Controller /dev/usb2:
addr 1: full speed, self powered, config 1, UHCI root hub(0x0000),
Intel(0x8086), rev 1.00
   port 1 powered
port 2 addr 2: full speed, power 44 mA, config 1, USB Serial
Converter(0x6001), FTDI(0x0403), rev 4.00, iSerialNumber FTDGFM4H
