If you really feel that giant lists of banned addresses | are the way to go, run a nameserver and do it there.
Which gives you the added benefit of being able to "share" these results with other computers in your network by configuring them to use said nameserver. Saves you from distributing this hosts file to a couple of machines. (I second Ted on the suggestion to use adblockers in your browser though).
