Yes, this only happens when bigmem is 1 (and BIOS has "Memory Remap Feature"
enabled).  I am running GENERIC.MP from -current with bigmem=0 on a daily
basis, and no such problems there.  I will test GENERIC and report back later
today.

I have already done this, and the result was more or less the same.  I was
being a bit vague in my initial post, but I will do some serious testing
later today and report back the results.
