Whatever are the differences (if there are some), rdate definitely timeout after 2 minutes. Confirmed in a little openbsd virtual machine of mine. So, for the original poster, i recommend that you sticky with rdate for now, it will timeout faster than ntpd -s. When Henning changes the ntpd code (that i expect will be on both current and 4.4), you get back to ntpd -s.
