you know, marc espie probably used a language he knows well, does the job well and is in base. as for python, many people do not like how this language does blocking. and not being in base is am absolute show-stopper for software that will be in base. (we usually do not make academic exercises before we start a new project. or maybe I should write my next radio clock driver in forth, I heard it is fast and small, so I am sure it is the right tool for drivers...)
