It can work, but to be honest it's one of those "if you need to ask you probably shouldn't be doing it"... If you keep a list of your currently-installed packages and a copy of /etc (as well as, of course, any more obvious user data) it's probably not a great deal more work to reinstall than "cross-upgrade".
