The 8s on the core2duo machine seems a bit slow since slower machines using 8254 take around 3.5s for the same test. It would be interesting to know which counter is actually used on that machine, maybe some newer ICH doesn't work as quickly with ichpm(4) as the older ones and changing to 8254 may actually be faster.
