I'm running 4.2-stable, using an Nvidia 8800GT, PCI-X (not GTX or GTS) with 22" Samsung LCD @ 1680x1050 no problems, but I was only able to get higher than 1280x1024 after I cvs'd an update provided by msf@ that I believe has since been committed to 4.3. Have you tried 4.3 just to see if there's been a change? If not, hopefully someone can come up with a solution. Have you tried without creating a custom conf file? After the change I downloaded, the auto detection worked out of the box for me.
