I have just spent a lot of frustrating time doing a clean install on a
new Intel mobo based system. [dmesg follows]

The system came with an onboard re and an Intel GigE (em). The
customer's preference is to have fxp nics everywhere and supplied me
with new ones.

So out with the em, disbled the re in BIOS, put in two fxp's and
started the install of 4.2 stable up to erratum 005 (no X so 006 not
needed) that has done several installs faultlessly including a firewall
with three fxp nics.

All sweet until fxp0 set to dhcp and install tried to get an IP and
ended up totally locked.

Checked that the cable etc OK by plugging it into my Tpad - no prob
getting IP.
Swapped nic for another from a working box. Same result.
Rebooted to shell from CD.
# ifconfig fxp0 inet 192.168.77.44 netmask 255.255.255.0 locked the
system solid again.

I then installed with NO nics configured and tried the ifconfig in the
running system.
Same lockup.

Going back to the em that I had pulled and re-enabling the re got the
system working including dhcp.

In the following dmesg there are some lines don't dig. A couple about
RTC battery. The clock is keeping time just fine.

I think I might find the cause of:
pcibios at bios0 function 0x1a not configured
with a bit of googling, but is it relevant to the problem?
and as for:
bios0: ROM list: 0xc0000/0xae00! 0xcb000/0x1000
What does the exclamation mark signify?

Anyway here is the guts:
