Was that a typo? wd1c is the whole disk. wd1a is the "a" partition. You may get significantly better drive information from the SMART electronics on your hard drive. You can access that info via atactl(8), but I find the smartmontools package much easier to use. Existing status will tell you about any previous errors sensed by the electronics. A short test will run a self-test of the electronics, a long test will test every sector on the drive.
