There was no internal IDE CD drive. So boot cd would not work... "failed to find boot device" So that extra horse shit (and I agree 100% that it is horse shit) was, unfortunately required. I ended-up RTFM and dd'ing floppy42.fs (which could not see the SCSI drives) but miniroot42.fs could. I got OpenBSD installed and it was *so* sane compared to Solaris. God I love this OS.
