I attribute it to an X problem. my fix is to ssh to the problem machine from another, or to login as root over a secure com port. Then kill the X server and restart it. In my case, the X server and machine is being used as an X-terminal, so I start X as "Xorg -query host_name_offering_xdm" I think the problem is related to bad behavior by fluxbox (run on another host, in my case) and the X server, possibly related to screen blanking or some sort of "focus grabbing". When the problem manifests, I can see tiny noise on the X screen (in my case it is displaying a dead-to-the cursor xdm login box), that responds to console input... I can hit CTL-ALT-F3, say, and blindly type in a root login followed by shutdown -r now command... and the machine reboots. I cannot reproduce this problem at will -- but have seen it once under 4.2/xenocara, after initial installation on this machine last week; it has not reoccured, but eventually it will. > My dmesg is as follows: snipped...
