I don't have an openbsd box I can try on right now, but I think that if you mute the beeps you won't be hearing it when shutting down (which means that since it is unacceptable in your lecture hall, you should mute it when your session starts). Also, I don't think that notification of logged in users is that much of an overkill if you compare to what happens when you do the shutdown. Gilles
