If you're going for cheap consumer grade stuff, you could do worse than a
Linksys WRT54GL --- four-port switch, separate ethernet uplink,
reprogrammable. Unfortunately it doesn't run any BSD (not even NetBSD, which
surprises me) but there's a rather decent and no-nonsense replacement Linux
firmware. About 35 UKP.

(It's also got a built-in wireless AP, but alas, it uses the Broadcom
chipset...)
