Ok, so sorry for all this noise, this was a hw issue. 'set diag-switch? true' at OBP prompt showed POST errors on DIMM1, I swapped both memory modules, and POST was happy. In five minutes, box was installed, and now happily runs -current. I really should learn OBP diagnostic commands.
