You didn't need to use 915resolution?
Could you post a full Xorg.log and maybe a generated xorg.conf somewhere?

i use 915resolution to get 1400x1050 on the internal panel.  but
1680x1050 just worked.  it's not one of the bios modes.  surprised me
a bit too.  the monitor was a samsung something or other.
