I maintain the pptp package. Note that the package as found on 4.0
is outdated. The docs are not accurate. You don't need to recompile
your kernel anymore to use pptp. The docs are fixed in -current and in 4.1.

I use pptp to connect to my uni's VPN. I can send you copies
of my configuration files off-list if you want.

Come to think of it I might even stick them into a future revision of
the package as well so it's easier for people to get going with pptp
VPN out of the box. Because unfortunately, the pptp upstream
documentation is way beyond horrible :-/
