i tried, but it didn't help. i've fscked my disk enough for now...
when the symptoms occur, it hangs on 'Starting network', and nothing
happens. no link-lights on the nics, no way to interact with the machine
but the reset-switch.

one of the three times i tried, re0 came up, but it hung on re1, same
thing. weird. i also noticed that the link-lights are on during POST,
and go off when the kernel inits the nics. then they just never come
on again. the same thing happens with a 'normal' boot (one that does
succeed), with the important difference that the link-lights come on
when 'Starting network' is displayed...
