The current -current is named 4.1-current, and will be named 4.2-beta,
4.2 (for a short time), 4.2-current, 4.3-beta, 4.3, ... - assuming
nothing changes in between, of course.

Extracting the tarballs will work, but do keep an eye on

Yes, but if you keep reasonably up to date, just using the provided
packages usually works just fine (right now is one example of a case
where it doesn't - we have a new X version).
