( I have a sick sense of humor)

I want to pass on the cheapest and coolest method I've found to hook up
the serial port on a LANDISK box PLUS my original setup. I've posted both
methods.

The original method:
I have a Plextor PX-EH25L sitting in the office which I ordered the day I
saw mickey's post about. When I got it in I did the uber nerd h/w mod,
cutting out a small section of the back plate below and to the right of
the 10/100 ethernet cable. Here I mounted an "RJ10/RJ22" modular handset
jack. They aren't really RJ cables as they were never meant to connect to
the PSTN. Anyway, I connected the handset jack wires to the Vcc/Rx/Tx/Gnd
pins at the front of the board. Then I plugged in the cable I use with
other embedded systems, which has a MAX3232 serial line level shifter chip
in the 9pin serial connector. The cable is available prefab(cost US$20),
all you have to add is love<BS><BS><BS><BS> a handset plug.

The cheap / coolest method:
Buy a cell phone USB data cable, I got two, shipped, for under US$6. I
used a "Futuredial USB Data Cable". Remove the little PCB enclosed in a
wide spot in the cable and solder Rx/Tx/Gnd to the pins at the front of
the board. The neat thing with this setup is it's USB, so you don't need
a serial port on a notebook AND the Prolific chip is powered off the host
USB.

BTW, the second method is probably already well known to anyone who's done
any Linux hacking on small wireless routers.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass on some LANDISK serial port hacking to the
misc@ crowd.
