The physical chip is a Tigon3, I believe (bge), but I'm not talking about as a host OS, I'm talking about guest OS. VMware provides a virtual Intel PRO/1000MT (82545EM). I was under the assumption it was the driver itself that was quirky. The observed behavior was almost identical to what OP described.
