It may be possible, but I think you'd need to know *exactly* what you
are doing.

If I read your message correctly, you were in a somewhat odd place. You
had a -stable kernel but did not build a -stable userland. Then you put
-release sources + patch(es) and tried to build userland from that. To
me this makes no sense. Various parts of your system are mismatched
between kernel, userland, includes, etc.

Perhaps if you state what you are trying to accomplish (as opposed to
HOW you are trying to accomplish it), then someone can help better.
Something like "I want an up-to-date system," or "I want to test the
effectiveness of this patch," or "I want to learn all about patching so
that I can help clients without following -stable at all sites."
