Same again. After tar zxvf src.tar.gz -C /usr . 10  minutes ago.
Its quite upsetting :(

Im almost certain it isnt a hardware fault.

Any ideas?

First, reinstall.

Then, next time you extract the source tree, do this in /usr/src, not in
/usr.
