Now, I've never seen this kind of behavior out of an Intel NIC -- they
tend to be of at least decent quality -- this is more like the behavior
I've seen on cheap Realtek-based cards.

I'm not saying that this is *definately* your problem, it just looks
like a similar problem I had a while back,  your best bet might be to
get a better NIC (or two in your case).  Even a cheap gigabit NIC would
do you better since they are meant to handle a higher load.

slow PCI bus + cheap NIC = high interrupt load == slow throughput.
