Sharing what you've learned and learning from others is the exact reason why most people are reading and posting to this list. Greg Oster, author of RAIDframe, took the time to explain his views to me many years ago regarding chances of recovery on failed RAIDs and what you got from me is probably just a poor regurgitation of what I learned from him. Nick really does claim to have done "hard stop" disk failure testing in running RAIDs by using the kind of .22 caliber nail gun normally used to put nails into concrete (oddly enough, that type of bullet powered nail gun is called a "ram set" here in the US ;-). Nick is one of the few who actually tests and practices the ugly disaster/failure situations. Hardware RAID certainly has it's place in the world and it does work as advertised some of the time but like everything, "where" hardware RAID is the "right" solution is certainly a lot more debatable than the hardware vendors would like you to believe.
