Sometimes ports have helpful messages that tell you the proper way to start it from rc.local or some other set of instructions that shoudl be your next step etc...
Sometimes these get installed as a dependency of another app though and so the screen just keeps right on trucking and you don't have time to read it. Is there some command or somewhere you can go to see what the message was? --Bryan
