This has been a long-standing issue with auvia hardware on some systems. I answered this on misc@ almost exactly two years ago: http://www.monkey.org/openbsd/archive/misc/0409/msg00384.html It's about DXS channels not being programmed correctly by the BIOS; in some cases a BIOS upgrade can fix the problem. Other drivers apparently work around this problem by disabling DXS channels. (I still don't understand audio drivers, so can't fix it myself.) The workaround, as you have found, is to tell the software to use 48 kHz. Thanks Tom
