Having read all the OpenBSD specific books I could get my hands on I intend to dig a bit deeper now.
After checking the list on http://www.openbsd.org/books.html I intended to buy The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System by McKusick et al. (ISBN 0-2015-4979-4) from 1996 but then found that there is also a newer book called The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System by McKusick et al. (ISBN 0-2017-0245-2) from 2004 As http://www.openbsd.org/books.html states that the "4.4" book is "Not 100% applicable, but probably the closest there is to an overall system internals manual for OpenBSD." I tried to find any OpenBSD specific comparisons ("4.4" versus "FreeBSD") to find out which one is to be preferred (from an OpenBSD point of view). I checked quite a few reviews on pages of book stores which obviously did not mention OpenBSD. I searched the net using additional query parameters like 'openbsd' or 'inurl:openbsd' to improve results. While I actually found two reviews of people who seem to have read both books these reviews did not answer my question. Checking the archives I found that both books were mentioned in a thread in 2005 (but not compared). Is there anyone who has read both books who could share some wisdom regarding the differences (e. g. file systems, chroot/jails, but surely not limited to those) between both books which could seem important to someone who is really interested in OpenBSD but not that much in FreeBSD? And, yes, I know that this question is not that glorious example of precision. But I think when I had asked it the way I personally liked it that would have been the day after I had finished reading *both* books. ;-) Thank you very much in advance for your help. -- "Feel free" b 10 GB Mailbox, 100 FreeSMS/Monat ...
