Aha! This would explain the mysterious "works mostly" thing ;)
Maybe the man page should mention something like this ?

Yay! I actually got the answer right.

It's not really manpage material. You'd have to stick a note about it
for every single command that is in any way related to partitions, to
be sure. Instead, the FAQ makes it very clear that the disklabel is in
the a partition, and shouldn't fuck with it, and for every other piece
of documentation it's assumed you've read that. The example in
ccdconfig(8) shows the use of e partitions.

Together with the reply from Kyle I will recreate the ccd0 next
week (after a backup of several gigabytes).
