are you sure the hardware is ok? I know you said FreeBSD installs ok, but you could still have a memory problem. The FreeBSD installation might use memory in such a way that the bad memory address is not touched...
I suggest, if you haven't already, running "memtest86" or "memtest86+" on this machine for a few hours...
