Yep -- weird problem, it seems. This is an old (Compaq) Pentium machine,
with two 40GB Maxtor IDE drives (dmesg on 3.8-stable follows,
no GENERIC at hand, sorry, but this one runs fine)

Yes, disabling RAID_AUTOCONFIG permits the kernel to boot, but it
panics as it the does not find the root (which seems normal ;-). I'll
stay with 3.8 for now.

dmesg and the console output with RAIDDEBUG enabled follow -- it
appears the two RAID members are indeed recognized, but they somehow
can't be mounted as the root dev.
