Maybe the installer can stay "as is" but record the components in de base system as packages in /var/db/pkg so upgrades later on can be performed with pkg_add, in smaller portions.
But, I have nothing to complain about the current situation, it works great now. Doing this, and doing it right will take too much developer time. Wijnand
