So, the machine isn't upgraded yet? You just ran sysupgrade and it
downloaded the files and attempted reboot with the new install kernel
/bsd.upgrade?
Then you should have the old 7.7 kernel available as /bsd. Try typing:

> boot /bsd

at the boot prompt right after you entered your FDE key.
I'm not sure how to "reset" the system so it doesn't attempt to upgrade on
next boot. Probably just some files that needs to be removed. Check man
sysupgrade.
