Until smarter people with better advice arrive: So, the machine isn't upgraded yet? You just ran sysupgrade and it downloaded the files and attempted reboot with the new install kernel /bsd.upgrade? Then you should have the old 7.7 kernel available as /bsd. Try typing:
> boot /bsd at the boot prompt right after you entered your FDE key. I'm not sure how to "reset" the system so it doesn't attempt to upgrade on next boot.
