While it is possible to do this, either the versions must conflict (which is a problem if other ports depend on the two different versions) or a bunch of extra infrastructure is needed to handle de-conflicting them (which requires extra work on an ongoing basis as things are updated to newer versions, and can make it harder to use with software outside of ports due to unusual filenames). So, if that can be avoided (as it sounds like may be possible from Volker's mail), that's usually for the best. -- Please keep replies on the mailing list.
