Looks good at first sight. Can mplayer open the the audio device? Maybe it's blocked by something else? Have you tried playing some mp3s with xmms for example? Maybe you run kde or gnome which have their own audio daemons? try 'pgrep artsd' and 'pgrep esd', any of these running? If so, you need to kill them first or configure your applications...
